In the Christian world, it’s easy to celebrate Easter and miss the meaning of the resurrection. If we’re not careful, we can become dull in our faith and forget the adventure of pursuing God in all his love, purity, and innocence. When we behold God in his innocence, we become aware of our shortcomings and insecurities—just as we do when holding an innocent newborn child. Because we feel uncomfortable looking to God for our security, we try to comfort ourselves with other forms of identity. But worldly forms of identity only provide temporary relief from the soul- deep discomfort we experience in the loss of our innocence. Hebrews 7 shows us that Jesus, as our innocent high priest, is able to restore our innocence and replenish our fruitfulness. We become fruitful in Christ, not by putting our attention on productivity—but by receiving a pure heart, out of which living waters can flow. In this pure relationship with God, we let go of our fears and false identities and receive afresh the freedom of sons and daughters of God.
